You've probably come across the term "surgical steel" while shopping for jewelry or jewelry findings. What does surgical steel actually mean? Is it a marketing term, or a genuinely distinct material?
In this article, I'll explain what surgical steel actually means and why it's considered a safe jewelry material. I'll also cover what consumers should really pay attention to when it comes to surgical steel.

Surgical steel isn't a single specific alloy, and you won't find it as such in official metallurgical dictionaries or legislation. It's a general term used to describe certain stainless steels with especially good properties for skin contact.
What these steels have in common is good corrosion resistance and safety for skin contact. They don't rust easily and usually don't cause skin irritation. That's exactly why these steel grades are used in both medicine and jewelry.
Although the term "surgical steel" is widely used, it isn't an official standardized term. The safety of surgical steel isn't based on its name, but on its tested properties and standards.
The key standard is EN 1811, an EU standard that measures nickel release from products in skin contact.
These tell you far more about safety than any general term on its own.
The most common types of surgical steel are:
316: the classic surgical steel, with excellent corrosion resistance, well suited for jewelry and healthcare equipment. It contains slightly more carbon than 316L, so its weldability is a little lower.
316L: a low-carbon version of 316 steel, commonly used in jewelry, piercing jewelry, and surgical instruments. It contains nickel but releases very little of it.
316LVM: the same as 316L, but "vacuum melted," an extremely pure grade suitable for implants placed inside the body.
304: a somewhat simpler and more affordable steel grade, often used in healthcare equipment, cutlery, jewelry, and watch straps.
Some sources include grade 304 among surgical steels. Others consider only 316L to be true surgical steel.
This can cause confusion, which is why it's worth understanding that the term "surgical steel" isn't a metallurgical, medical, or legal term. It's an everyday, marketing-established name, not a defined material category.

The safety of certain steel grades isn't accidental. The high chromium content in surgical stainless steels forms a protective passive layer on the surface, which prevents corrosion and reduces nickel release. This passive oxide layer is the main reason surgical steels are durable and safe for consumer use.
It's worth remembering that although surgical steel contains nickel, what matters isn't the amount of nickel in the alloy itself, but how much of it releases. The permitted limit for nickel release in the EU is a maximum of 0.5 µg/cm² per week. High-quality 304, 316, and 316L steels stay well below these limits.
Surgical steel also withstands moisture, sweat, and everyday wear. In other words, exactly what quality jewelry needs to hold up to.
