Frequently asked questions about the product

What kinds of jewelry do 4 mm earring posts work best for?

4 mm earring posts work best for small and medium-sized stud earrings, where the decorative piece is glued directly onto the post's flat pad. They're a good choice for small resin pieces, polymer clay charms, glass cabochons, crystals, and flat-back embellishments.

The 4 mm pad gives more gluing surface than a 3 mm post, but it's still usually hidden behind the small decorative piece. Choose the 4 mm size when making small stud earrings but you want a slightly sturdier attachment surface.

For very small and delicate embellishments, the 3 mm post is the most discreet option, while larger or heavier stud earrings call for a bigger size. You'll find all our earring post styles in the earring posts category.

How do you glue the decorative piece onto a 4 mm earring post as durably as possible?

First clean both the post's 4 mm pad and the back of the decorative piece of dust, grease, and sanding residue. Use a strong glue suited for jewelry making, such as a quality jewelry glue or two-part epoxy, and let the glue cure fully according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Many jewelry makers lightly roughen the surfaces to be glued beforehand, so the glue gets a better grip. If you're making jewelry for sale, always test the bond on your own materials before making a larger batch.

Do earring backs come included with these posts?

Earring backs are ordered separately for these posts. The post is 0.7 mm thick, so all the earring backs we sell will fit it.

The most common back used with these earring posts is the 6 x 4 mm earring back, but our other backs work with them too.

A metal back gives the earring the most secure lock, but for very light stud earrings, a snug silicone stopper is often enough as well.

Are these earring posts suitable for jewelry made for sale?

Yes. These earring posts, made of 304 stainless steel (like all our other products!), are also well suited to jewelry made for sale. Steely Pop's jewelry findings are nickel-safe, REACH compliant, and tested in Finland, so they meet the EU requirements for jewelry sold to customers.

If you sell finished jewelry, it's a good idea to state the material clearly to the customer, for example: "earring post, stainless steel 304". That way the buyer knows exactly what material was used in the piece.

Frequently Asked Questions About Materials and Safety

Are Steely Pop's jewelry findings compliant with EU safety requirements?

Yes. The products in our range meet the chemical restrictions applied to jewelry in the EU (such as the limits on nickel release and the thresholds for lead and cadmium).

What is surgical steel, and is it safe?

The term "surgical steel" is a general name for a group of stainless steel grades with especially good properties for skin contact. Surgical steel is widely considered one of the safest jewelry materials. Steely Pop's jewelry findings are made from steel grades 304, 316, and 316L, which are often referred to as surgical steel.

Can stainless steel cause symptoms in people with nickel allergies?

Stainless steels are well tolerated by most people and are suitable even for sensitive skin. Individual sensitivity varies, however, and some people may still experience allergic symptoms from stainless steel.

Are Steely Pop's findings tested?

Yes. Testing is part of our quality control, and we regularly commission laboratory tests to ensure jewelry safety.

What does the REACH Regulation mean?

REACH is the EU's chemicals regulation, which restricts harmful substances in products and requires companies to ensure their products are safe. When products meet the REACH Regulation, they comply with EU law and are safe to use.

Do Steely Pop's findings meet the REACH Regulation?

Yes. Our products meet the REACH Regulation, and we confirm this with official laboratory tests.
