Frequently asked questions about the product

How heavy can pendants be for this hook?

This hook works well for light to medium-weight pendants, up to roughly 3–5 grams. The round 20.5 mm shape and 0.7 mm thickness hold the piece securely and comfortably.

For heavier pendants, such as larger resin pieces or stone drops, we recommend a thicker hook or a lockable style.

Is this hook suitable for sensitive ears, even with long-term wear?

Stainless steel 316 is one of the best-tolerated jewelry materials and meets the nickel release limits set by the EU REACH regulation. Steely Pop regularly tests its earring hooks at an accredited Measurlabs laboratory, confirming their suitability for prolonged skin contact.

If you've reacted to other earring hooks in the past, it was most likely due to untested materials or lower-quality metal alloys.

How do you attach a pendant to the hook?

The most common way is to use a jump ring. Open the jump ring sideways with flat-nose or round-nose pliers, attach the pendant, and close the ring again. A 4–6 mm jump ring works well with this hook. A jump ring also turns the attached piece to face forward.

You can also attach the piece directly to the hook's own loop. Always open the loop sideways (not straight outward) with flat-nose or round-nose pliers. Opening it sideways keeps the loop's round shape intact and prevents metal fatigue.

How does this classic style differ from the hook with a reversed loop?

In this classic style, the loop faces forward, so the pendant hangs straight down and tilts slightly forward from the ear. In the reversed style, the loop is turned so the pendant sits flat against the skin without needing a jump ring to get the right angle. The classic style suits most jewelry, while the reversed style is especially good for flat or larger pendants that need to sit at a particular angle.

Does the hook stay in the ear on its own, or is a back needed?

The hook stays in the ear well on its own, but a silicone stopper is a good extra safeguard. It keeps the hook from sliding out of the ear, for example during sports or when it catches on clothing. Our silicone stoppers fit this hook and are easy to add later on.

Frequently Asked Questions About Materials and Safety

Are Steely Pop's jewelry findings compliant with EU safety requirements?

Yes. The products in our range meet the chemical restrictions applied to jewelry in the EU (such as the limits on nickel release and the thresholds for lead and cadmium).

What is surgical steel, and is it safe?

The term "surgical steel" is a general name for a group of stainless steel grades with especially good properties for skin contact. Surgical steel is widely considered one of the safest jewelry materials. Steely Pop's jewelry findings are made from steel grades 304, 316, and 316L, which are often referred to as surgical steel.

Can stainless steel cause symptoms in people with nickel allergies?

Stainless steels are well tolerated by most people and are suitable even for sensitive skin. Individual sensitivity varies, however, and some people may still experience allergic symptoms from stainless steel.

Are Steely Pop's findings tested?

Yes. Testing is part of our quality control, and we regularly commission laboratory tests to ensure jewelry safety.
