A glass cabochon works beautifully in, for example, photo pendants, keychains, magnets, and other jewelry.

The domed glass gives the piece a finished look, and magnifies and deepens the image underneath it. Choose an image with a clear subject, good contrast, and framing that works well in a round shape.

These glass cabochons fit Steely Pop's 25 mm bezel cup settings.

What kind of image works best in a 25 mm glass cabochon?

Images with a clear main subject, enough contrast, and a calm background work best. Very small text, thin lines, and highly detailed patterns can look cluttered under the glass, even if they look sharp when printed.

A 25 mm glass cabochon works well for, for example, a single flower, a graphic pattern, a small painterly detail, initials, or a clear photo crop.

Do you glue the image to the glass cabochon first, or to the cabochon setting?

For photo glass cabochon jewelry, the neatest result usually comes from gluing the image to the flat back of the glass cabochon first. Once the glue has dried, the excess paper is trimmed away along the edge of the cabochon. Then the finished photo cabochon is glued into the 25 mm cabochon setting. This makes the image framing easier to control, and the surface under the glass looks seamless in the finished piece.

How do I keep the paper from darkening and the ink from smudging?

It's worth protecting the image before gluing with a clear varnish or another protective layer suitable for paper. This is especially important with inkjet prints, thin paper, and materials that absorb glue easily. The protective layer needs to dry fully before the image is glued to the glass cabochon or the cabochon setting. A test piece is the best way to make sure the paper doesn't darken, the ink doesn't smudge, or the color of the image doesn't change from the glue.

Which glue is suitable for attaching a glass cabochon to a cabochon setting?

Between the image and the glass, it's worth using specifically a clear glue that works with paper and dries transparent. For attaching a glass cabochon to a metal cabochon setting, E6000 Plus jewelry glue is a good option. Apply the glue thinly and evenly so the cabochon attaches securely but the glue doesn't squeeze out over the edges.

When is a glass cabochon not the best choice?

A glass cabochon isn't the best choice if the piece needs to be especially lightweight, completely flat, or flexible. Glass gives a piece a beautiful domed surface, but it also adds weight and requires a flat base. If you want to make very lightweight earrings, large statement pieces, or irregularly shaped resin jewelry, plain resin, acrylic, or polymer clay may be a more practical option.
