The domed glass gives the piece a finished look, and magnifies and deepens the image underneath it. Choose an image with a clear subject, good contrast, and framing that works well in a round shape.

These glass cabochons fit Steely Pop's 30 mm bezel cup settings.

What kind of image works best in a 30 mm glass cabochon?

The 30 mm glass cabochon already gives an image plenty of room, so slightly larger details, clear photos, textures, and graphic patterns work well too. You'll get the best result with an image that has clear framing, good contrast, and a calm enough background.

Very small text, thin lines, and overly crowded patterns can look busy under the glass. Because the glass cabochon is domed, it can emphasize the center of the image and slightly change how the edges look. That's why it's worth checking the image under the glass before gluing it.

Do you glue the image to the glass cabochon first, or directly to the cabochon setting?

Often the neatest way is to glue the image to the flat back of the glass cabochon first. Once the glue has dried, trim the paper precisely along the edge of the glass cabochon. Then glue the finished photo cabochon into the 30 mm cabochon setting. This way it's easier to get the framing right, and the image can't shift inside the setting while it's being glued.

Can a 30 mm glass cabochon be used in earrings?

Yes, but 30 mm is already a fairly large size for earrings, and the glass adds weight to the piece. That's why it works best for earrings where size and statement are a deliberate part of the design. Before making a pair for sale, it's worth testing the finished earrings' weight, movement, and comfort.

If you're aiming for a light, everyday earring, a smaller glass cabochon, acrylic, resin, or polymer clay may be a more comfortable choice.

How can I avoid air bubbles trapped under the glass cabochon?

You can reduce air bubbles by using a thin, even layer of glue. Place the glass cabochon calmly over the image and press it into place so the glue spreads from the center outward. Bubbles show up easily under clear glass, so it's worth doing this step in good light.

Porous papers can absorb glue unevenly. In that case, protecting the image beforehand with a clear varnish helps make the surface more even.
