Description

A wide, smooth-surfaced ear cuff finding that's most typically placed on the upper edge of the earlobe, with no piercing needed. The minimalist metal earring works on its own, but the hole at the edge lets you add a decoration or link the piece to other earrings.

You can attach a small charm, bead link or chain decoration to the hole, for example. Keep any hanging pieces fairly light so the cuff stays securely in place and doesn't twist from the weight of the decoration.

To build a statement earring set, connect the ear cuff finding with a chain to another earring worn on the earlobe.

Stainless steel makes the finding a durable choice, including for jewelry made for resale.

Frequently asked questions about the product

How should you position an ear cuff on the ear?

Start by threading the ear cuff onto the thinner part at the top of the ear, then slide it down to a spot where the edge of the ear is a little thicker. You can also gently squeeze or open the piece slightly to find a good fit. It's best not to bend the metal back and forth every time, though, since repeated opening and closing puts strain on the structure and can weaken it over time.

Once you've found a good fit, put the cuff on and take it off by sliding it over the thinner part of the ear rather than opening it up each time you wear it.

The cuff can sit around the middle of the outer ear or higher up on the cartilage, depending on where it fits securely and feels comfortable. A well-fitting cuff feels snug without pinching or shifting easily when you turn your head.

What size jump ring should be used in the hole?

Choosing the right jump ring depends largely on the size of the loop on the chain or charm you're attaching to the ear cuff. The jump ring should be as small as possible while still large enough to move freely both in the ear cuff's hole and in the jewelry piece being attached. Using a small jump ring is recommended, since an unnecessarily large ring adds unwanted weight to the piece.

The diameter of the ear cuff's hole is 0.9 mm, so the largest suitable wire thickness for a jump ring is 0.8 mm.

How do I get a charm to hang facing forward instead of sideways on the ear cuff?

What matters is the direction of the attachment hole and the charm's own hole or loop. If a single jump ring leaves a flat decoration hanging sideways, add a second small jump ring after the first. Two jump rings in a row rotate the hanging direction by about 90 degrees.

Check the orientation of the hanging charm especially with flat metal pieces, acrylic charms, resin pieces and polymer clay jewelry, where the front of the piece needs to face a specific direction.

Which ear does this ear cuff fit?

This simple C-shaped ear cuff finding isn't pre-shaped for only the right or left ear, so it can be worn on either side. If you build an asymmetrical chain or charm structure onto the cuff, though, the finished piece may work better on one particular side.

How can you connect an ear cuff to an earring?

You can connect an ear cuff to an earring with a thin chain. One end of the chain is attached to the cuff's hole with a small jump ring, and the other end to, for example, a stud earring with a loop or an earring hoop.

With a regular stud earring, the chain can also be used to create a so-called ear jacket: a small ring at the end of the chain is threaded onto the post of the stud behind the earlobe and secured in place with the earring back.

You can also attach two or three chains of different lengths to the same hole in the cuff using a single jump ring, giving the piece a layered structure.

There's no single correct chain length, since the position of the ear cuff and the piercing vary from person to person. About 4–6 cm is a good starting point. The chain should drape lightly between the cuff and the earring without pulling either piece out of place. A chain that's too short easily ends up tight, while one that's too long can hang too low and catch more easily on hair or clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Materials and Safety

Are Steely Pop's jewelry findings compliant with EU safety requirements?

Yes. The products in our range meet the chemical restrictions applied to jewelry in the EU (such as the limits on nickel release and the thresholds for lead and cadmium).

What is surgical steel, and is it safe?

The term "surgical steel" is a general name for a group of stainless steel grades with especially good properties for skin contact. Surgical steel is widely considered one of the safest jewelry materials. Steely Pop's jewelry findings are made from steel grades 304, 316, and 316L, which are often referred to as surgical steel.
