Frequently asked questions about the product

What kinds of jewelry do 5 mm earring posts work best for?

5 mm is one of the most popular earring post sizes, since it works excellently for making small and medium-sized stud earrings. The pad works well with small resin pieces, glass cabochons, polymer clay charms, 5–8 mm crystals, and flat-back embellishments.

The pad is large enough to offer a good gluing surface, yet small enough to stay hidden behind most small decorative pieces. Choose a 5 mm post when you want a good attachment surface for a stud earring without the pad showing past the edges of the decorative piece.

If the decorative piece is very small (3–4 mm), a smaller post may be a more discreet option. For larger embellishments, consider a 6 mm post or bigger. You'll find all our earring posts in the earring posts category.

What size earring back fits a 5 mm post?

The post is 0.7 mm thick, so it fits most standard-size stainless steel earring backs. We recommend, for example, 6 × 4 mm earring backs.

If you'd like extra support for heavier jewelry, earring backs with a plastic support hold the earring securely in place and add to wearing comfort.

How do you glue the decorative piece onto a 5 mm post as durably as possible?

First clean both the post's 5 mm pad and the back of the decorative piece of dust, grease, and any sanding residue. Use a strong glue suited for jewelry making and let it cure fully according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Many jewelry makers lightly roughen the surfaces to be glued beforehand, so the glue gets a better grip. If you're making jewelry for sale, always test the bond on your own materials first before making a larger batch.

What material are the 5 mm earring posts made of, and are they safe?

The earring posts are made of stainless steel 304 (AISI 304), a material commonly used in jewelry for its durability and good tolerability. The material is nickel-safe and REACH compliant, and it holds up excellently to moisture and everyday wear.

Steely Pop regularly tests its jewelry findings at Finnish laboratories to meet the EU's jewelry safety requirements. Read more about stainless steel as a material or find out what we actually test for.

Frequently Asked Questions About Materials and Safety

Are Steely Pop's jewelry findings compliant with EU safety requirements?

Yes. The products in our range meet the chemical restrictions applied to jewelry in the EU (such as the limits on nickel release and the thresholds for lead and cadmium).

What is surgical steel, and is it safe?

The term "surgical steel" is a general name for a group of stainless steel grades with especially good properties for skin contact. Surgical steel is widely considered one of the safest jewelry materials. Steely Pop's jewelry findings are made from steel grades 304, 316, and 316L, which are often referred to as surgical steel.
