Frequently asked questions about the product

What do 8 mm earring posts work best for?

8 mm earring posts are suited for making medium-sized, slightly more eye-catching stud earrings. You can glue on resin pieces, glass cabochons, polymer clay charms, acrylic pieces, wood, or other flat-backed embellishments. The 8 mm pad gives plenty of gluing surface, making it a good choice when smaller 4–6 mm posts feel too light or narrow for the size of the piece.

When should you choose an 8 mm post instead of a 6 mm post?

Choose an 8 mm post when the decorative piece is medium-sized, a bit heavier, or needs a wider gluing surface to stay securely in place. A 6 mm post suits many ordinary stud earrings, but an 8 mm pad gives more support for, say, wider resin pieces, larger polymer clay jewelry, and bigger glass cabochon studs. If the decorative piece is small and delicate, an 8 mm pad may show from behind, in which case a smaller style from the earring posts category may be better.

How do you glue a decorative piece onto an 8 mm earring post as securely as possible?

Clean both the post's pad and the back of the decorative piece before gluing, so the surfaces are free of grease, dust, or sanding residue. Use a strong glue suited for jewelry making, for example E6000 Plus jewelry glue, or another jewelry glue suited to your material. Light roughening can improve the glue's grip, especially on smooth materials like resin, acrylic, and glass. Let the glue cure fully before using, packaging, or selling the piece.

Where should the 8 mm post be positioned behind the decorative piece?

The post's position affects how the earring sits in the ear. For a round or well-balanced piece, the post is usually placed in the center. If the piece is long, asymmetrical, or heavier at the bottom edge, it's worth placing the post slightly above center so the earring doesn't tilt too far forward.

Do earring backs need to be ordered separately for these posts?

Yes, order earring backs separately for these posts. The post is 0.7 mm thick, so all our standard earring backs fit it. A piece made with an 8 mm pad may be a bit heavier than a stud earring made with a smaller post, so a secure metal back is often a good choice. A silicone stopper may be enough for lighter pieces, but it's generally not as secure as a metal back. You'll find suitable options in the earring backs category.
