What kinds of earrings does a 3 mm flat-pad earring post work best for?

The 3 mm pad works best for small stud earrings where the decorative piece is lightweight and flat-backed. Good uses include small glass cabochons, resin pieces, crystals, flat beads, polymer clay jewelry, and other small embellishments that can be glued directly onto the metal pad.

If the decorative piece is clearly wider, heavier, or uneven, choose a style with a larger pad instead, for example the 6 mm-pad earring posts.

How is the decorative piece attached to the earring post?

The decorative piece is attached by gluing it onto the post's flat 3 mm pad. Clean both the earring post's pad and the back of the piece before gluing, so the surface is free of grease, dust, or sanding residue. Use a strong glue suited for jewelry making, and let it cure undisturbed according to the manufacturer's instructions before wearing or packaging the piece.

If you're making polymer clay or resin stud earrings for sale, for example, the attachment can be reinforced if needed by covering the post's pad with a thin layer of resin on the back of the piece.

Do earring backs need to be ordered separately for these posts?

Yes. These earring posts are supplied without backs, so you'll need suitable earring backs separately. All the earring backs in our range fit these posts.
